Ayurveda 101: Self Care Using The 5 Elemental Approach
By Cristina Kuhn for Yoga Digest. 2020 has brought significant transformation to all of our lives; some certainly more so than others. Transformation can be stressful
Cristina is the founder of The Yogi Underground and currently splits her time between the United States (Washington DC area) and Barbados, where she lives with her husband and three children. She is a Yoga Medicine® E-RYT 500-hour instructor and Therapeutic Specialist, a 500-hour Kripalu Yoga Teacher, a Reiki Master, an Ayurvedic Health Counselor, and a lover of gluten free baked goods and dark chocolate.
In 2009, when Cristina was pregnant with her third child, a little voice told her to go to yoga teacher training. She had been practicing yoga for 10 years at that point, but couldn’t even see her toes much less touch them, so she dismissed the directive. After the birth of her daughter, the pull had grown stronger, and before she knew it she was starting YTT when her daughter was only 4 months old. Since 2010, Cristina has been teaching a wide variety of classes including Vinyasa, Yin, Restorative, Prenatal, and Gentle and since 2014 has been teaching her classes through an Ayurvedic lens.
Cristina began her studies in Ayurveda after she received a diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis in 2011. She already knew that her yoga practice was helpful, but wanted to go deeper into the practice and learn how it affected her systems. In 2014, Cristina began her studies with Yoga Medicine® and loves how seamlessly her functional knowledge that she learns with YM fits into the biological approach of Ayurveda. She now works privately with others who have autoimmune diseases, injuries, and mental health issues, with the goal of supporting their best selves at that moment.
