This 4-week course is designed for physicians and healthcare providers as a foundational introduction to yoga and mindfulness with bite-sized lectures on philosophy, therapeutic approaches, scientific theories, and clinical evidence. Each week includes short meditations and movement practices that busy physicians and medical trainees can easily fit into their days. If you’ve been curious about the benefits of yoga and mindfulness for yourself or your patients, this accessible overview can be a great place to start.

 

Course Details

  • Definitions and brief history of yoga and mindfulness in relationship to health
  • Philosophies of health and disease within yoga’s mind:body approach
  • Current biomedical theories around how yoga and mindfulness impact health
  • Evidence regarding the use of yoga and meditation with different clinical populations
  • Applications of yoga and mindfulness to impact physician wellness and flourishing 
  • How to discern between various styles of yoga and meditation and how to find therapeutic professionals in your community.
  • Pen and paper for notes; but remember, a downloadable handout comes with this course.
  • A yoga mat, 1-2 towels, wall space and any additional props that you use for your own practice.
    • Note that the practices can be done on the floor and you can find any comfortable seat for the meditations and breathwork.
  • Course length: ~5 hours of online training videos.
  • 4-week course is accessible for all levels and includes the following each week:
    • Two short lectures
    • 1 accessible movement based practice
    • 1 restorative class
    • 2 meditations
  • Each lecture and guided practice is presented in short and digestible segments that easily fit into your schedule. Follow the weekly course format or stretch the sessions out over a longer period if you prefer. Remember, you can always go back to review a lecture or repeat a practice that resonated with you.
  • This course is not eligible for any hours of continuing education hours with Yoga Medicine® and/or Yoga Alliance.
  • This course is available on-demand and does not expire, so you can always return to practice and revisit the material to deepen your understanding over time.

About The Teachers

Dr. Rashmi S. Bismark, MD, MPH is a US-trained physician, board certified in Preventive Medicine and Public Health. In parallel with conventional medical training, Dr. Bismark has spent the past 15+ years studying various complementary and alternative healing modalities, including ayurveda, energy healing, yoga, and meditation. She is currently in the process of completing RYT-500 training with Yoga Medicine and is receiving mindfulness teacher training through the Oasis Institute, Center for Mindfulness, University of Massachusetts.

Dr. Bismark’s current practice is focused on offering holistic mindfulness-based lifestyle programming tailored to individuals and communities for health promotion and the improvement of risk factors and outcomes related to chronic diseases. She feels very fortunate to travel the world with her husband’s job, raising two little yoginis-in-training, and sharing mindful ways of nurturing life and healing.

The yoga practices in this course are presented by Megan Kearney. Megan has a combined degree in kinesiology and business leadership. As a yoga teacher for over 15 years, she first entered the world of yoga via meditation more than 25 years ago. She has more than 6,000 teaching hours under her belt as a E-RYT and a 500-hour graduate of Yoga Medicine. She is a certified Yoga Medicine Registered Therapeutic Specialist and Yoga Alliance continuing education provider. She is specifically trained in myofascial release work, Thai massage, mindfulness-based meditation, yoga for traumatic brain injury resilience and mixed martial arts practice.
