Interoceptive Intelligence
In this monthly dose, we’ll discuss the concept of interoception. Interoception is one of our senses - like taste, smell, touch, hearing or sight - however, it’s the sense of what is happening inside the body, underneath the skin. When we become aware of our heart beating, our breathing, feelings of anxiety, or hunger - we are practicing interoception. It’s all about sensing internal signals from our body. It helps us recognize our own emotions and is thought to be helpful in how we recognize the emotions of others (e.g., Feldman et al., 2023). Research also suggests that interoception might be very important for our own physical and mental health and wellbeing (e.g., Guu et al., 2023; Vabba et al., 2023).
