Yoga can be a great way to support fertility and we have a whole full-length course on this on www.YogaMedicine.com (our Women's Health Training), but I'll try to sum up the important stuff for students here. Keep in mind for specific conditions you might need more individualized support, check out our Find a Teacher page on YM to find a qualified teacher near you or online who has taken our Women's Health Training. The key here is to support the shifting needs and hormones during each phase of your cycle The first phase is the menses and during this phase you'll want to have classes that help create both circulation and downward flow (think malasana and squats). For some people they enjoy exercise and movement during the period and for others they don't want to do anything. It doesn't need to be vigorous, just find a way to stir up circulation in the pelvis to help facilitate the shedding of the endometrial lining to clear the slate and prepare for a smooth cycle ahead. You can use the Menses Practice or anther class you enjoy to create circulation without over doing it, no need to skip the down dogs but replace the inversions with your pose of choice (perhaps pigeon or a supine twist). The second phase is the week after the period, this is the follicular phase where the follicles and endometrial lining are growing and developing. Local circulation is still important, but this is a time for more nourishing, introspective practices like yin and restorative. Take some time on your mat to replenish and support yourself in this phase. You can use the Post-Menstrual practice or any yin/restorative you like. Phase three is ovulation and here you want to spark more warmth and circulation in the pelvis to help trigger the quickly shifting events during this time. In the Support Ovulation class, you'll have some options to do that, you could also replace it with a fun but more vigorous flow in this phase. Repeat this for the 3 days or so leading up to ovulation. The final or fourth phase is the pre-menstrual phase. For this phase you'll want to calm and create circulation without depleting so look for calming flow classes like my Feel Good Flow. If you’re trying to get pregnant inversions are great during this phase, any that you feel comfortable and confident doing. This isn’t a time to learn new inversions or do anything fancy, stick with the ones that you can stay in for at least a minute or my favorite- legs up the wall with a blanket under the pelvis- for 5 minutes. If you’re doing IVF follow a similar plan, doing the ovulation class for a few days prior to the expected retrieval day and continue this until retrieval. In the waiting period between retrieval and implantation/embryo transfer stick to simple practices that calm and support circulation. Some of that is personal preference but if you like flow classes try my Refuel Flow (great if you’re feeling depleted) or my Quick Fix for Professional Desk Sitters (this gentle flow works all around the hips and pelvis). And of course first and foremost follow any specific guidelines from your doctor. I also recommend a simple meditation practice throughout to calm and bring you back to the now, I’ve included a couple of my favorites but really any meditation practice you feel grounds you in the moment is perfect. I’ve also included my Relax and Recharge with Acupressure and MFR to be used anytime you need some extra nourishment. I recommend picking one of two of these points that resonate with you to do daily to support vitality, especially if/when you’re feeling depleted.
